2009 June 11

(Filamer Christian College, Roxas City)  A two-day seminar-workshop on Qualitative Research was sponsored by the newly-found group, Capiz Historical Institute or CHI, held last June 5-6 (2009) at the Audio-Visual Conference Center of Filamer Christian College, Roxas City. The invited lecturer was Prof. Leothiny S. Clavel from the University of the Philippines in Diliman and Manila campus. Prof. Clavel gave importance on the approaches of historical research, folkloric and ethnographic studies. He used interesting materials or subject matters that further deepened the interest of the participants such as, a) the multiple names of the people of Capiz, b) the legends of the Giant of Pilar cave, Olotayan & Sapatos islands and Mantalinga and Tuwad islets. He also introduced Ethnography as a methodology in conducting a cultural analysis of a govenrment agency.

The series of lecture was followed by workshops which they (participants) were divided into three groups. During the plenary discussion, the three groups were given opportunity by the lecturer to present the results of their workshop dubbed collectively as a Research Agenda for Capiz.

The set of research agenda produced by the workshops was turned over to the CHI as a basis of its pursuit in the future historical and cultural studies of Capiz.

Participants came from various sectors and institutions such as Filamer Christian College, Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion, Capiz State University (Main, Dayao & Pilar campuses), Department of Education-Capiz Division, HERCOR College, Provincial Tourism Office, City government of Roxas, and the Local Government Units of Pilar, Sigma, and Panay.

On the second day of the seminar-workshop, the participants – who reached more than 40 persons – were transformed into a general assembly whose purpose was to 1) to elect members of Board of Trustees or BOT, and 2) deliberate the Vision and Mission Statements of the Capiz Historical Institute.

When the BOT was eventually formed through parliamentary procedure, it was convened immediately by Mr. Virgilio Clavel and Mr. Sarreal Soquiño as members of the secretariat, for election of officers. The officers and members of the BOT are the following:

v     Jorgen Gregorio – President

v     Ruel Doce          -  Vice President for External Affairs

v     Ella Aurelio         – Assistant Secretary
